    Only one I've tried so far is Merlin Bird ID from Audubon. Seems to only cover the common birds and those most likely to be in the area at the time. Not the ones I want help with.

    I don't use an app but the Peterson and NatGeo bird guides (6th edition) are considered tops. When I was trying to learn the birds it wasn't until I started using a Peterson guide that I really started to recognize the individual species. That'd be my first suggestion.
