Johnny Reb......I figured out an alternative to Photobucket.

The fact that you didn't have a call is probably why you killed all the ducks especially the black duck. Well that and you had 5 ducks on the water. But this late in the season a call will often flair birds. Kudos for having patience and waiting on the blacks to cup. Sometimes that can be hard to do. Congrats on a damn good hunt.

I posted the first 4 mallards I ever killed in SC on this site back in 2001. My post, to the best of my recollection, was nearly identical to yours...except my birds were clipped toes and yours includes a badass black drake. I remember someone's post well, and it's stuck with me ever since...it applies here, so I'll pass it along. He said something like, "you've obviously figured out two of the most important aspects of duck hunting; be where the ducks want to be, and be still till you can kill them." 16 years later, I'm still learning to call, and while I can turn birds and pull them into my blocks, it's usually birds that you can tell really want to be there or birds that are wanting down somewhere in the vicinity. I listened to a couple hundred mallets on some sheetwater this afternoon, and I've got a lot of learning to do. That said, if it was still duck season here, I could go out tomorrow and kill a limit of greenheads in short order because that dood was right...and I know where they want to be and how to be still till I can kill them. You keep doing what you are doing, because you are obviously doing those two things right. Pick up a call when season is done and start trying to talk to them for next year, cause you can't claim beginner status BS if you shoot a black out of a group of 6 that circled into your blocks only after watching the green heads do it safely. That there is strong.

Congrats on the black. You should have let the group sit and made a "guaranteed" skillet shot before getting a few more mallards on the rise.

Delta in a nutshell: Breeding grounds + small wetlands + big blocks of grass cover + predator removal + nesting structures + enough money to do the job= plenty of ducks to keep everyone smiling!

For real. Folks around here mount more ducks than anyone I know.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

Pretty mount. Some people will go their whole like without killing one.
