Don't sell yourself short on the deserving part. That is one of the greatest things about wild waterfowl. They come and go on their own free will. They belong to no man. We may prepare a place for them to come to us, or travel the continent in hopes of crossing their path, but they will always hold the final card.
That duck spent 12+ years flying untold miles with those legs tucked up under him. Who knows how many tight spots he got out of with a host of predators. Maybe he hung back just enough last week to not get shot on a private pond that spent a couple hundred thousand dollars preparing a place for him. Maybe some kid on a public pond drew down on him with his brand new Christmas present last year and missed. Yesterday morning he picked your decoy spread to join in on and it was your shot that closed the circle. I'd say you're every bit as deserving as anybody else.
Enjoy your trophy. It is indeed a trophy among trophies.
I wish I could breathe life back in him, if I could I'd hunt him again tomorrow. - Ben Rodgers Lee

That is an incredible bird man, don't let anyone tell you don't deserve it as the post above mine says it best, that bird is your trophy. A crazy thing to think about it is that duck was born when you were 16 or even younger. I would love to know (although I know there is no way to actually figure it out) what the overall odds are of shooting a duck (that species, that age and a Jack Miner band) like that down here, truly a once in a lifetime bird. Congrats!
Edit: the more I think about it, I would actually say that is a once in multiple lifetimes bird!

It's safe to say there wasn't a more special bird killed in the entire country yesterday
Like some of you, I often cuss about living in the worst state, of the worst flyway in the entire country (by duck numbers). What makes duck hunting in SC special is not the quantity, but you do still get the chance at quality birds. Even though the weather sucks and the odds are slim- I reckon I will go hunt tomorrow and a couple more days next week. You put in more effort than most and deserve that bird. Congrats again
Congratulations!
I dont know what else to say. That is a true treasure of a lifetime sir.
Whoever told you that you were undeserving needs to understand just how unbecoming jealousy can be. You deserve it as much as the next guy. I keep clicking on this thread looking at that bird and muttering to myself...that lucky bastard. Congrats, what a bird!!!
Now go buy a lottery ticket...

^^^^this^^^^well said, sir!
Sounds like God brought you a message my friend! I'll go as far to say that YOU were the EXACT hunter on this planet deserving of THAT bird. I've got a few buds down that way that I've been trying to get and who have been threatening to drive the 10 hours to join me up here. If you want, pm me, and I'll get y'all in touch with each other. If you want to hunt out of state and do so in some cold conditions, you just figure out how to get here and give me enough time to get the mrs. on board, then head this direction. I'm no expert duck hunter, but unless the weather is horribly unusually bad, I can put us on some ducks and guarantee a good time and great story.

This band couldn't have happened to a nicer guy
DHall- hearing your life story is as impressive as this Duck you have harvested. Congratulations on both. Sounds like you have made good in life, and No Doubt deserved this Trophy of Trophy Birds.
Showed my kids. Nice bird..
DHall, sweet bird and the jewelry to boot! Have you gotten any word back on the band and age of the bird? Does anyone know when the last "Jack Miner" band was placed or if the foundation is continuing to band birds?
