Default Gas Water heater installer Greenville?

any sponsors that do this locally?

    If not sponsors, any recommendations?

Already have Piedmont Natural gas running heat and stove if that helps.

So you had electric before and are changing over to gas or are you replacing gas with gas? Or is this an all-new installation?

Setting a water heater is easy breezy.

    have 'lectric

    going to gas.

From experience of switching from 'lectric to gas range, i have to have a licensed person to run gas lines and hook it up.

Just went to Lowes and they say I have to have some "expansion tank" bull hockey.

Your gas company should be running the gas line for you free of charge.

You do not need an expansion tank. Tell that feller at Lowes to stop giving advice he's not qualified to give.

If I could get them to answer the galldang phone i was going to ask them if they had a purchase program. When I worked at Suburban in college, if it ran on propane, you could buy it from them and they would install it.

Expansion tank alleviates the pressure that comes from heated water - takes the stress off the heater itself when the water expands due to heat. I don't think I have one on my system, but my house was built in '97. I'm sure it's code now. It's not a big deal to install one - it just goes in on the cold water side in front of the water heater. Minimal plumbing on the cold and hot water, depending on the size and layout of the new heater. If you're having someone run the gas line for the other appliances, just have them run it to the heater site, then you can easily plumb it from there. If you're not comfortable doing it, holler and I'll come over and we can knock it out.

As far as I know, Greenville County doesn't maintain their own code book. (this is a joke... I know they do not)

Per the IRC 2015, none is required that I know of. Greenville is working off of the 2015 version of IRC.

Now, if your system incorporates a backflow preventor (check valve or otherwise), a small expansion tank is required.

If this isn't going to be inspected after installation, what the hell are you worried about anyhow? You do NOT need it.

You do realize that water heated from ~60degF to <140degF expands a very minimal amount, right?

Your pressure gradient due to heat gain in your tank/piping will be minimal (read negligible). These types of codes are a direct reflection of the commercial/residential water heating industry's perversion of common sense.

This is Turbo's wheelhouse. I'm just a weekender what fixes stuff my own folks break. I have no idea if an expansion tank is needed - just explaining what it does.

And codes and their ensuing inspections are for honest folk who like to pay more in taxes - not us people that actually get stuff done.

You're exactly right about what it does.

However, specific volume of water at 60degF is 0.01603ft^3/lb. Specific volume of water at 60degF is 0.01629ft^3/lb.

If I had a PE stamp, I'd write you a letter that said simply:

    Dear Inspector Man:

    Fuck off.

    Love,

    turbo

Then, I'd stamp it and the calcs that prove my point and mail it to you for you to hand deliver to that idiot.

Turbo is 100% correct. A T&P relief valve which all storage type domestic water heaters have, takes care of any potential expansion issue.

PNG can install the heater for you, and they should have a purchase program if you need it. Their service guys carry more certifications than most anyone you'll ever deal with.

Expansion tank is only required for commercial use, residential all you need is a pan draining to exterior and a drip leg on the gas.
