My guards came with the boxes from DNR.

As for making some, have you sketched out making them in two pieces using the smaller size sheet metal vs trying to do it with one? There's an extra seam, but if you rivet it in several places it to keep from having a gap wide enough for a critter to grab I'd think you'd be OK.

Had not thought about that and that looks like what we are going to have to do. Thank you for your help!

I use 1/4-20 galvanized carriage bolts so I can pull the top bolt out and spin the box upside down to dump the nest. I usually do this twice a year or when I am replacing the no pest strips in January. I have both old and new styles of boxes.

They've been courting hens and loading up my boxes for the past week or two. I clean my boxes out after jump day and I've had up to 3 hatches out of one box. This is one box Coot Nasty helped me raise up to keep the boxes out of Spring floods. We put new predator guards on poles when raising boxes. This box is probably 20+ years old and still turning them out.

Listen to your elders. Not because they are always right but because they have more experiences of being wrong.

I just emailed the guy at DNR and got a very fast response. The boxes are under construction at the Wateree Correction Facility but are still delayed with no target delivery date set.

They're probably only allowed to work them one hour per day, with the rest reserved for TV time, game room, exercise room, kitchen cuisine training, legal advisory time, Islamic prayer time, et al.

As for nesting, I've only got three boxes up out back along the creek this year, but have had absolutely no nesting activity other than the wrens taking over #3 box as they usually try to do. For the past 20+ years, we've had at least two nests by now, and often would have 3-4 per season, with 10-12 hatching successfully from each nest. I don't know if the guys next door shot all the wood ducks in the area at their pond (which I doubt since most of them are poor shots), or the birds for some reason decided to nest in other locations up or downstream. It's disappointing.
