    Default HDD Mirror Imaging?

What is currently the best 'free' method or software to do a HDD mirror image to an external drive so that I don't have to spend days reloading software, et al, on a new HDD?

    Thanks.

I am not sure if this is what you are talking about but we just bought one for work. We cloned a hard drive to a new hard drive. I will get the name of it for you tomorrow.

Yes, that's what I'm referring to. I would also duplicate the mirror/clone on an external drive as a back-up image.

    Thanks.

Whatever hard drive you buy should come with imaging software.

This is what we have. I think it was about $40.

    That's just a dock.

When you get your new drives, they'll come with imaging software.

I just replaced one in my laptop. From the time I started to the first boot up with the new drive installed was <40min. It really is too easy nowadays...

It is a dock but it also is used for cloning hard drives.

It's been a few years since I changed HDD's and forgot about the included software. Although it strikes me that the last one still required me to re-install everything but the basic Windows stuff. Do the current packages do it all?

Using the included software, I did the following:

    -boot PC
-connect docking station and new SSD
    -execute cloning software
    -select drive(s) to clone
    -click go
    -drink a beer
-pc shuts down on its own when complete
-remove old drive and slide new drive in the slot
-reboot like nothing ever changed save the fact that my boot sequence runs in 15sec where it was nearly 2min
    -done deal

That's a full disk erase. It writes "00" into all of the sectors.
