    Default Wood Stove #2

We currently have gas logs in our house and I really love traditional wood burning fire places. The house doesn't have a traditional chimney, (just a hollow case with a pipe out the top) so I would need an insert. Is it possible/feasible to remove the old insert and replace it with a wood burning insert? Will it require a new pipe or will the one thats in there work?

Replace everything, don't take chances with older flue pipe.

You'll probably have to replace the whole deal.

However, a zero clearance unit will fit your needs nicely. Hopefully, you can find a unit to fit in the opening you currently have so you don't have to re-frame anything.

I don't mind replacing the pipe going up, i was just curious if one of the inserts needed a traditional chimney.

If it's not a zero clearance unit, it will require a masonry chimney.

Zero-clearance is what you'll have to have. Wood burning inserts require masonry to move/transfer/protect from heat. Zero clearance stoves can be pushed up to a stud. My zero clearance takes a 7" insulated pipe, so if you currently have an insulated pipe, it could possible work, but I doubt you'd know until you pulled it. I'd bet money that you'll need a new pipe to mock up to your new stove.
