    Default Lab Coat Colors

Anybody know what the genetics are to get a particular color in your litter? I'm starting to think about breeding my yellow lab. From what I've read, if I breed to another yellow, I will have a yellow litter. If I breed to a chocolate, I can get chocolates, but will probably get mostly or all yellows still. Breeding to a black makes it possible to have all 3 colors in my litter. I know 1 color is not smarter than the other, I just know that some people prefer 1 color over another.

Breed to a part chessie part brown lab and get a silver. They're pretty popular with the kids these days and bring lots of $$.

Yeah, so are labradoodles. I'm sure that would be tacticool, but I'm not.

    All depends on the bloodline.

And I hope you aren't planning on making a profit off of these breedings.

Just get a Boykin. Please don't breed a yellow to a chocolate unless
    You have a yellow/yellow & a choclate/chocolate. Then you'll get 100% blacks.

Depends on the chromagene chart. If I'm reading it right. If I get the right chocolate with my yellow, I could have 1/2 of each.
All of this hinges on the results of hip and eye checks.

Back yard breeders are the worst.
Are you breeding to improve the breed?
Color of a litter cannot replace genetics. Hard to find brown dogs with out some sort of skin disorder.

Why can't you breed dogs in your back yard and have nice dogs?

You can but you have to have the right dogs. It's a rare thing I believe. At one point in time, you could say my family were backyard breeders. We had one hell of a stud with all sorts of good in him. He did well and produced good pups. I still have one to this day...so does Bdunc, Duckkiller, and my younger brother. All of those dogs are stellar. Some of the best you'll find I would imagine.

At least some or all will come out already named "Dudley".

There's a lot to color coat genetics. You only know for sure if your dog carries a color if either parent is that color or you do a genetic test for color coat inheritance. Both parents have to carry that color to produce a puppy of that color. Look at the chart on the link provided and it gives the potential offspring you would get from a specific breeding pair.
