    Default Tree/Leaf ID Assistance Needed

I'd appreciate any assistance in an ID on these oak tree leaves, at least that's what I've got them pegged as. What throws me off is the range in size of the leaves off the same tree.

The largest leaf is about 14" in length and something like 7-8" in width, and the smaller ones are 'normal'.

I had originally pegged it as a Bur Oak, but the acorn size doesn't mesh, and neither does the normal range.

    Thoughts?

This is a 15" ruler laying on the leaf...

The acorns are about the same size as Water Oak acorns ~ 1/2" in length, and these cups are approximately 3/8" ID... which rules out White Oak, right?

Big leaves look like burr oak. Small leaves and acorns look like post oak but I'm no expert.

I swear the leaves look like 2 different kinds.

It dont happen to be a split tree, connecting at the bottom does it?

A white oak or a swamp chestnut oak is what I'm saying. But I did terrible in Dendrology.

No, it's one trunk with a few branches splitting off higher up as normal, but all of the leaves came off of the same set of branches. It's been confusing me for years.

Here's a picture I just took of the bark. Maybe that will fill in a blank...

    Oak Tree Bark_1.jpg

You may be right on the Post Oak as the bark looks like it, but the large leaves throw me off as they are 2 1/2 x's the size of 'regular' Post Oak leaves... aren't they?

Shade leaves can do funny things.
Probably a post oak with some funky shade leaves....

It's only about 8' or so off the edge/end of the driveway 'wing' in front of the far garage corner. It's not doing real well because it's just in front of and shorter than a couple of larger trees behind it and thus gets shaded out. Unfortunately I've not found another similar one on the property, despite having 15K-20K(?) trees.

How about a sand post oak.

    State, soil type, region?
Unless it's a transplant, it can be answered with certainty!

SC, North side of Anderson, soil = 'loam' soil... 3-4 tiers up from the sandy, swamp soil near the creek... 3 tiers down from upper field with a light brown dirt/clay/sand mix. Former cotton fields (150+ years ago). Property (13+ acres) is mostly covered with trees ranging from Water Oaks, Loblolly, Long Leaf, & Virginia pines, Sweet Gum, some Maple, Persimmon, Birch, 'Turkey' Oaks, a few Chestnuts, etc.

    Anything else?

I agree Post oak. Having lived up that way for years I have seen the same thing. Shade leaves from the PO will throw in that pattern.

No, it just happens to be one of the first trees that we didn't cut down when we had the house built 20+ years ago.

It is growing right on the bottom of a 3' tier bank, and hidden in the briars and honeysuckle there is the stump of the original main tree. This is what appears to be an old offshoot growth from that and is presently about 9" in diameter.

I agree that that smaller leaves and the bark pattern do look like a Post Oak. It's the huge leaves that have always thrown me off since I haven't yet found another one like it on the property over the years.
