Default Garden virgin. What needs to be done now?

Eh, to hell with the kudzu work right now.

I have a ~60 x ~30 area I can use with plenty of sun. It's all yard grass.

What do I need to be doing now to prep for next year's garden?

Can I use a round up type now and it be dissolved and gone before tilling? Or should I go ahead and rototill it? Or just turn it all over?

I've got plenty of hay. Is it worth covering the area with a heavy layer, remove when ready to til?

I've got way more questions, but school me on the basic prep work first.

Soil test and lime if necessary.

Problem with the hay would be any seed that might be in it. Cover it with leaves if you can.

You can spray it in the spring and still be able to plant.

Cover it in about 4 inches of horse manure then till in the spring.

Careful with horse manure unless it has been composted. You will be bringing in every weed seed that they ever ate.

Careful because if the hay fed to them was sprayed with Pastora, you will kill everything in the garden.

I meant to add earlier. Gardening is year round for us. Work up the garden and be ready to plant winter greens in late winter early spring. Pull soil samples and lime now. Fertilize ahead of planting.

Man I've never had an issue with weeds, usually the manure is so strong it kills everything

It's going to be hard losing your virginity covering everything in horse manure.

how bad's the stench compared to turkey manure?

got way more than enough leaves to compost on the area if it's worth it

hs, just like the first time around, i expect some disappointment and failure

the other thread about seeds had me thinking....

its nice out. I wanna start my summer garden. I wish i was more like smilee, minus the smiling part, and had a year round garden.

who all starts tomatoes, etc from seed? i did it for a couple of years but it became more of a science project than a garden starter. i came out with way too damn many plants.
Ugh. Stupid people piss me off.

I've got two soil block makers that are really easy to transfer smaller blocks to bigger then into a pot then into the garden.

I'll start them in the house soon.

Going to try some in the aquaponics this year and see how they do under the shade cloth as well when it heats up.

Get your lime on it now. If there are currently plants/grass growing in the area go ahead and break the ground up now. Plowing over the winter will help with week control.

I finished liming earlier today, bare earth for grass.. I'm trying to find enough time in my day to find a definite place for a garden. I think it'll take another year at least to get the ground right.
