I do the same thing but instead of cascade I use blue dawn dish soap. I keep mine on a low simmer. First one I did years ago I boiled it hard for quite a while and the skull plate broke off when I pulled it out of the water.

FWIW,
I use baby powder and the salon 40 peroxide to make a paste and brush it over and into the skull, sit it in a container overnight and then spray it off with a hose the next day, somewhere you don't mind if it kills the grass. Once dry it's stark white throughout and your wife won't mind the smell. Have read on taxi forums that you can reuse the powder but I don't. Also, wear a goggles, mask and gloves. As you probably already know, that stuff will eat on you. Seems the quickest and easiest way to whiten to me.
