    Default Broad River WMA

Last week the Broad River Wildlife Management Area in Fairfield County was dedicated by Ducks Unlimited and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. The Broad River WMA is a 670 acre property where public waterfowl hunting is one of several recreational uses of the land. The WMA is open to the public from February 2-October 31. DNR operates draw hunts for waterfowl during the winter season. Bird watching, fishing, archery, deer hunting and small game hunting are also popular at the Broad River WMA.

A collaboration between Ducks Unlimited, SCDNR, and SCANA improved water management capabilities that limited crop production and moist-soil management on the property. DU engineering and biological staff designed and engineered the project which greatly enhanced waterfowl habitat in the area. The total project cost was over $500,000 with funding contributions from DU, SCDNR, SCANA, and the South Carolina Ducks Unlimited Tag Fund, which DU was able to leverage to secure a North American Wetlands Conservation Act grant.

Ducks Unlimited is proud to have delivered another successfully leveraged project for the benefit of South Carolina’s citizens and our public lands hunters.

That is great! That property held lots of ducks during the 90s and early 2000s.

What might you mean by that?

A project has a scope, budget, and deadline.

You usually get two of the three. If DU says they're done, their scope was completed.

I hunted the place the first year it held draw hunts. Met John Frampton for the first time as he was runnin it. We had a heck of a hunt way back then. We killed GW, mallards and a buddy got a black. It might have changed over the years but it is a killer spot

Great to hear. That place needed some help. Last time I was there, the little Cat II up the river was harvesting and attracting more ducks...

Glad to see some DU time and money spent in the midlands. Its way past due. Broad River is a great property for ducks in the midlands and we are most appreciative to have it and to see its potential enhanced.

There is still a lot of potential for other duck holding properties in the midlands area that I hope to see enhanced one day. The Savannah, Saluda, North and South Edisto all have great potential. A managed property in this area would really go along ways for the western/midlands region of the state.

I saw it on Facebook last week posted by Chester DU and DNR. News release should be in an upcoming DU mag from what I was told. Don't know about DU website.

Did really well in the 90s down that way. Sad what it had become.

DU engineers did the design and planning work, then left DNR to do the work and SCANA to pay for it. Would be nice to see the project plan.
