    Default GPS

    Need to decent hand held device that is not going to break the bank. Any information would help. Thanks.

    Not sure if they're still on sale but I picked up a Garmin 64st from Cabelas for $249 a couple weeks ago. They're normally $349.

    You know about the base model at all or did you get the model with the US topo
    Also, when you get the handheld devices do you really need the topo maps of areas or is the basemap that is on the device any good?

    Add the detailed maps if you don't have them. Best way to learn the GPS is, after studying the material, go outside and work it. Waypoint projection is seldom used but is a really neat feature if you shoot a deer in a cut down. You will need a compass and rangefinder also though.
    If it ain\'t accurate at long distance, then the fact that it is flat shooting is meaningless.

    I'd bet a pretty penny that 90% of people using a gps have no clue how to really utilize a compass
