Report from Edisto Beach.
Reminiscent of Hurricane David in 1972, Hurricane Matthew has brought sand which is covering Palmetto Boulevard. Two houses have been washed away around the 400 block. Sand covers Palmetto Road up into the parking lot of the EZ Shop. That is a very dangerous area.
Operators of the Pavilion failed to turn off the large LP gas tanks, and they are leaking explosive gas in that area.
One group was able to pass the causeway and go down Palmetto Road to the 800 block. After that, the sand was too deep. Another person came from Brand Street down Jungle Road and was able to get to the 1000 block. They were blocked by fallen trees.
Crews are preparing to begin to remove the dirt from the roads and fix the power lines late today or tomorrow.
There is a complete and total curfew on Edisto Beach.
At present no one knows how long it will take to get everything stable enough for homeowners and property owners to return. A rough estimate would be mid-week to the end of next week for homeowners. Maybe tourists a week or more after that.
It's not good but it's not as bad as it could have been.

Video of Edisto. I can see my stepmom's house survived. For reference the center of the video is the 900 block at 7min.

The inlaws house on the 300 block lagoon looks ok. Flooded underneath but all appears intact. Friends house across the street on the beach washed out underneath but looks ok.
We'll have some eyes on the ground the next day or so. Headed down the weekend to clean up.

You will be issued a day pass at the checkpoint after you produce ID showing the address of your property. This may be a drivers license, utility bill or tax bill.
You may have to wade through water so dress appropriately with boots, long pants, etc.
No resources are currently available. Plan to bring any supplies you need. Water, food, etc. No water is available for cleaning.
Any spoiled food must be bagged and placed in the garbage cart and rolled to the curb. Do not place in front of any object that would block the garbage contractor's equipment.
