Default New Life for an old Windows laptop

I've got a 2007 Toshiba laptop with a 5400RPM 100GB hard drive running Windows Vista that I keep downstairs and use for email, surfing, cyber scouting, etc.

Long story short, I replaced the hard drive with a 240 GB solid state drive over the weekend. It's a very simple process and took only about an hour but, man, what a difference.

Boot-up is 30 seconds instead of 3 minutes. Word and Excel load in the blink of an eye. Everything is faster, quieter, cooler and the battery life is way better.

Short of buying a new one this is the best $85 I've spent in a long time.

A SSD is the best investment you can make in an old machine.

Solid states are where it's at...when I built my PC a few years ago, my computer nerd friend insisted on a solid state, (at that time, they were quite a bit more expensive). I bought it anyway, and couldn't be more happy. Add to that 32 GB's of ram, and it is just flat out fast. Solid states are what make our smart phones so damn good

So, why did I only hear about this two weeks ago? Am I hanging with the wrong crowd?

I wouldn't have known about them if not for my buddy...he's a coder and knows all things computers. Find you a good nerd, and keep them close

I've had one a few years now and it is really nice. But like BG said, they were pretty expensive initially. They've just started to become the norm in laptops recently.

They also aren't as big typically. And alot of people that don't know any better are going to be drawn to the laptop with the 1Tb hard drive even if they will never use it.

I have an older HP Compaq laptop running Vista. Sounds like I need to upgrade mine too, cause it's slow to boot up these days, way too slow to do pretty much everything. It's the one that has the smart card reader that I use for checking military emails, etc from home.

It sounds like I ought to upgrade my old desktop that I use for business accounting, taxes, etc. It takes upwards of 5 minutes to boot up with Win 7 on it.

What is currently the best 'free' method/software to do a HDD mirror image to an external drive so that I don't have to spend days reloading software, et al?
