    Default Would you hunt this?

My son and I went deer hunting yesterday afternoon. There's a cut corn field with an area of sunflowers about 1 mile from the spot we were hunting. I had some time to kill so we drove by the field and there were a good amount of birds flying. I believe it's part of a dove club.

Anyway we drove to where we deer hunted and parked. The deer stand sits on the edge of a cutover, and like I said about 1 mile from the field. As soon as I got out of the truck I noticed doves coming over the cutover. We watched for a few minutes and they were coming over pretty steadily in groups of 5s, 10s, 15s +. So we preceded to the stand. For the next hour it was pretty steady, and slowed down around 6:30 pm. Obviously they are going to roost. For the most part they all followed the same pattern and I know exactly where to get.

Would you hunt this? It's not as fun as being in a field with buddies, but it's all I got right now for opening day. My son was pretty fired up about it.

My only concern is some of them were flying pretty high, and others not so much.

Would a mojo dove in the cutover help at all? Or since they are going to roost they will ignore it?

I would definitely hunt it! Throw the mojo out for a bit to see if it helps, if not take it down.

I'd definitely hunt it. I've used a mojo in a similar scenario and it helps to bring them closer when just a couple shooters like that.

But like slaya said I don't know how that would work if it wasn't somewhere they wanted to land. I'd look for a clean spot or at least a sandy or gravel spot. They'll also look for water in the morning so later season that might be another option.

Put the mojo on a piece of a stick on top of a wind row, and get 40yds in front of it..

They're below our place every year, you'd think we were releasing ducks or something. And there you're thirty feet below the bank..Then you've got the tree line.

Yes, I have hunted a cutover with some mature pines left, next to a dove field and done well. Problem was most birds were treetop high going to the field.

Sounds interesting. I like shooting decoying doves.

One of my favorite hunts last year was spent watching my youngest swat doves coming to a Mojo in a cutover. Good times.
