The answers to that question would take a long time to spell out. Starting with where it all begins, strong family structure with parents committed to being the best parents possible is essential. If your kid is being bullied, recognizing it and helping them learn how to deal with it is essential. If your kids are bullying, re-emphasizing their roles as God's childern along with a swift ass whooping is a start. Keeping kids away from and off of social media is a freaking must. Then there are the mentally ill that no amount of parenting skills and perfect environmental conditions will prevent...must be facilities available with trained, caring staff to deal with that. Since there is no funding for that, we've substituted with jails and apathy. Most mentally ill self medicate with illicit drugs which they will be arrested for if they get caught...so they end up addicts too...which they won't seek help for due to the jail thing. I say make the drugs legal...they will get them anyway...which would put street drug dealers and the Mexican cartel out of business, allow addicts to get clean without fear of legal ramifications, and could fund great mental health and rehab facilities...of course that would only happen if the money were earmarked for that purpose and the politicians could not redirect it to do stupid stuff like funding solar projects or building bridges over swamps to help cousin Elrod out. Pretty easy solutions that are impossible in today's climate where the hot new phrase "common sense" means anything but.

Kid should not have had weapons...but sounds like the family wanted to dump that responsibility on the government vs taking any responsibility. If true, that is likely the mindset that led to this conclusion in the first place.

Not sure why they think guns are the problem. Not referring to suicide, but more so the mass shooters, they're all coo-coo nut cases. There is a common denominator in all of these cases, and it isn't the guns.
