    Default Chattooga River Trail

Anyone familiar? I know the trailhead is in Georgia but curious how much of the trail is in Georgia. Trying to figure out where to grab my fishing license

I am pretty sure since chatooga borders sc, your license is good for that river.

SC and GA have a reciprocal agreement for fishing on border lakes/rivers. So your SC license is good enough for fishing Guinekelokee River (Chattooga). That said, the bag limits may differ, they did on bass at one time, not sure about trout. If you are fishing on/from the GA side you have to abide by the GA bag limits, even if you have a SC License and SC allows you more fish.

Sorry for a delayed response. But I can shed a little bit of trial knowledge.

I fish that area on a regular basis, if you are fishing on the lower end of the trail (28 Bridge put in) you can park on either side of the bridge. However make sure you use the trail on the GA side for the first 1.5 to 2 miles. It is a lot easer access the river and a much easier walk. This 2 Mile Stretch from 28 bridge to reed creek is the DH section but you can keep fish in there until november 15. The trail will end on the Georgia side and force you to cross to the SC side, you will know when to cross when you come across the forest service rd.

From Reed Creek up to Nicholsons ford will probable be best accessed by Nickolsons Ford Rd. on the SC Side. The foothills trail picks up at this point and runs up to Burrell's Ford and is a fairly easy trail.

The next access point is also on the SC side at Big Bend Rd. It is a fairly long, but easy walk in before it connects with the foothills/chattooga trail.

The next access is at the Burrells Ford Campground, from the bridge up river the trail is easiest walking on the SC side. From the bridge down you can walk ether side but the GA side has better river access, the SC side trail leaves the river and goes to the camp ground.

There is also access from the fish hatchery, this trail follows the east fork of the chattooga down to the river, however this is a heck of a trial to traverse. If you want to fish the east fork be prepared for some steep climbing and plan to just walk in the river instead of trial.

All this being said there are trails running all over the place, and Siri sure as hell want help you out so make sure you get a decent map. The guys at the Chattooga River Fly Shop on 28 have some good maps and will take the time to make sure you don't get lost.

That place is a gem. Probably my favorite place in this entire state for a hike or camping trip. That East Fork section from the Fish Hatchery is beautiful, but like said above that trail is some 20-60 feet above the river, and is a vertical climb to get down to it. I would either hike the river, but probably would just pick a different section to fish if I were you. With the other options being in the same area and much more convenient.

The last time I was there, I had a freaking ball. Other than some Feds and GA LEOs, they were as courteous as they could be with our situation. I did work with an ultralight, my SC license sufficed.

Scared the piss outta this whiteboy for the ranger to throw us on the ground and tell us if we moved he would blow our heads off.
