I have heard about politicians getting involved in game warden employment but level 1 technicians???

You are lucky these days to find someone qualified to operate a shovel and show up to work more than three consecutive days.

I have spent the last ten years of my life meeting with government employees promising they will do it better. This is the first time I have ever heard of one that did not ask for more money.

I'm sure the director will straighten him out after he gets this report.

Ok Duck, Not that you care, coming from little ole me (since you and I have had our exchanges) but here is a chance for you to step in and shine. Help me get a "publicly chaired" SC waterfowl advisory board reinstated. What say you?

Great idea Strick. PL could have the legacy of helping improve the states waterfowling, get people involved who don't buy ducks and release them to shoot. Who actually know the difference between widgeon and Bermuda grass

Ditto. I've heard this from people within. Posting jobs online that already have people for the job within DNR that are friends with someone else.

Not sure I get the "don't care part." I don't hold grudges.

I care about ducks and have pursued management of for them since a young adult.

I care about Santee Coastal. I visited it when I was a DNR Board member.

I appreciate your desire to see better management of public lands.

I will do anything in my power to help you get on a board.

When I Chaired the Wildlife Committee on DNR the governor and the Board selected the members of the waterfowl committee. When I searched the website it looks like the selection process has not changed.

Typically members know a board member or politically helped the governor. Do you have a relationship with any current DNR members?

Have you seen the "minutes" lately? They don't talk about half the issues they used to, several good guys either left or got replaced.

    Good on you S9.

Default Santee Coastal Reserve Meeting Update

The type of committee that needs to be formed needs to contain members of the public that have professional experience in sound waterfowl management practices and will speak unbiased. Right off the top of my head 3-4 names come to mind that would be perfect for such a committee. They all have well over 20 years managing for waterfowl in this area. I also think it should include some landowners from the area that have have waterfowl habitat in their best interest.

The rep from the SCWA should not be on a waterfowl committee.

I am waiting to stand corrected as it seems I may have been misinformed that the committee was disbanded.

I agree with the committee type mentioned above most certainly and from the date mentioned it seems that a committee does indeed exists.

To be honest, though if it does exist I am not seeing their actions come to fruit.

I am open again to corrections at anytime.

Clemson hired Rick Kaminski from Mississippi State to head a waterfowl research initiative at the Baruch Institute. Looking from the outside in (I will be the first to admit that I have no clue how to manage brackish or saltwater wetlands) but it does seem that there might be a lot of opportunity for research into the best ways to remove invasives/undesirable species and return former rice fields to a productive state for waterfowl, seeing as there seem to be a large amount of former rice fields in very poor condition on the coast. The proper reclamation practices may already be out there and if so, ignore my post!

There's several Tammie shooters on that committee list.

Threads like this make me even more disappointed I didnt start duck hunting until my mid 20's 10 years ago. I don't have any knowledge of how things used to be, and I missed out on having the connections to be able to actually help. I would have loved to have had a career in this field, but never had any knowledge of openings as I was finishing graduate school. Dang if I couldn't have helped out more.

That said, thank you Strick for all you did. Don't hesitate to ask if you need any support for anything. I don't have much financially, but I can write letters and make phone calls all day long.

I sold them some stuff recently and they have some nice equipment. Sounds like they have the labor, albeit inexperienced, to get some work done. All starts at the top though.

Delta in a nutshell: Breeding grounds + small wetlands + big blocks of grass cover + predator removal + nesting structures + enough money to do the job= plenty of ducks to keep everyone smiling!
