I used to build houses with a guy from West Virginia. He had never heard of fat lighter before. We were building a fire in a fire barrel and i walked in the edge of the woods to find some lighter. Came out with a little stump and he asked me what I was going to do with that. I explained what it was and he looked at me like I had three heads. I busted off a little peice and started the fire and he was amazed. I gave him the rest of the stump, and told him about how to find more. Now anytime he has someone come down from WV to visit he sends them back with a bunch of it. They will come down with orders for it. I have thought about taking some up there and seeing what i could sell it for.

Unfortunately, my wife can't handle any wood smoke/fire smell in the house any longer, so my 'fat lighter' supply will last a few lifetimes.

    Industrial Uses

Another use is in the production of dynamite. The largest company that utilizes Fatwood for this process is located in Brunswick, Georgia, USA. The exact process by which they process the stumps is a company trade secret, but it is understood that the stumps are ground and turpentine is removed from them, while the remaining sawdust is used as a binding agent for nitroglycerin.

Hercules Used Fat Lighter To Make Gunpowder

Then I met a forester working for Hercules Inc. Back then, Hercules made several by-products from ‘Fatwood,’ including gunpowder. They had two foresters traveling the Southeast looking for and arranging the harvest of fatwood stumps.

Huh, no. I like G, he's a friend and funny. I don't think he has a fan club, it would be news to me.

NUTZ, did you know G had a fan club?

    b35w,

Don't split more than you need reasonably soon. It is more perishable after it's split.

During high school, I worked at the Charleston Rifle Club bowling alley as a pin boy. I had a few opportunities to climb up into the attic of that old building. All of the rafters and tongue and groove roofing boards were made of fat heart pine. The sap had beaded up on it to give it a rough pebbled look. There were still wires running across insulators up there. Then the place caught fire a few year later, it went up like a torch.
