    Default Late afternoon quickie

A buddy of mine had been telling me that he had seen a covey across from his house while digging peanuts this last year. Got off a lil early this afternoon and met him at his house. Walked through the first stand of Newly planted pines and never saw my dogs act the least bit birdie. Looped back around and about 75 yards in front of the truck the dogs found the covey. The shorthairs did work today, just wish I would have carried something besides the double, first wild covey of the year.

Very nice!! I've only had one chance to shoot at a wild covey. I've shot dozens more vicariously through my grandfathers stories of the old days.

Killing wild quail is worthy of mention.

    Congratulations.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

    Damn.

If you had only shot one bird, it would have been the same value..

Wild quail make it move... I love them..

My grandad won't talk a lot about hunting wild birds due to the fact of his best dog getting shot back in the late 70's while bird hunting, word from his best friend is that they were bird hunting the dog ran into the back yard of one of his rental houses who had chickens and got shot before they could stop him. But my grandads friend said those were the glory days. Says he paid for his first new truck (a 1969s ford), his first real shotgun(a Belgium A5 that is completely silver now with a 23" barrel and electrical tape wrapped around the barrel the size of a tennis ball)and his wife's wedding band with quail he shot. Always tells some of the same stories over and over, but I love them. Favorite is about someone he calls an old timer that he used to hunt with named Parnell Brumbles, said he was the best there ever was, always claims Parnell would consistently shoot 3 plus birds on a rise. When you tell ole Gene that 3 birds on a rise isn't that great, he always responded with the same old shit eating grin "let's see you do it with a double barrel."

Turkey hunting last spring, I flushed a covey. Hoping to see or hear them around the same area this year. I am also hearing a few WMA are holding a few. I would love to see them rebound strong.

Our deer lease is managed for quail and is slap full of them. A quails home range is only around 40 to 50 acres. Standing grass along field and wood edges does wonders. Most farmers would rather have 4 extra rows of crops however. I've probably seen around 20 to 30 coveys this year while hunting. Fun to watch.

Every single one of the few wild coveys I've seen have been memorable. As mentioned there are a few on some of the WMAs. I wish those areas would get to trapping some predators though!

That double gun did the perfect amount of damage to that covey. Good work.

You are right Rubberhead but that trigger starts feeling good on a rise that big!
