I wish I still had the picture of the one I killed at 5 yards with a 7mm 140grain Nosler. It severed both front legs and the head was barely holding on. Then shot his buddy at 7 yards and ripped his off side leg and shoulder off.

It was just a poor little baby.

I was about to flip him over to get the exit wound but decided against that after I saw all the mosquitoes on him.

I didn't read all of the thread so I am probably way behind here.

Did that dark spot have any surface fat left that ended up air or salt dried? It looks like it may be a grease burn, especially if it's still smelly and greasy.

What happens is un-removed surface fat gets dried either by salt or by air really deep into the skin itself. If it is grease burn it wouldn't tan well in that spot and would likely be harder than elsewhere.

Just something maybe to try and help you solve it or figure it out.

I'm not in a position to take a picture, nor do I possess the aptitude to post said pic if I did, but I just clipped a good sized one at point blank range in a 2016 Kenworth T270 loaded with 10,000 lbs of ductile iron pipe. Not a 1000 yard shot with a $2000 rifle, but the results are the same.
