Just wondering what is the best way to get a mate job on a boat. I have fishing expirience and want to get the ball rolling in becoming a charter capitan. I know about the licenses I have to get and everything, I just want to go ahead and start at mate. I have pretty much been my dads mate on his offshore boat all since I was old enough to learn the ropes offshore. I also do varnish and detailing in boats. What I'm struggling with is finding the right boat to mate on. What is the best way to go about obtaining one of these jobs?

Yes....it's still gay, even if you were in international waters.

Can you bite the head off of a ballyhoo? Do you own a pair of costas? Cause Costas make captains...

The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Get your ass down to the dock and start talking to captains. You need experience besides your dad's boat. So the right boat to mate on is anyone that will put you to work. Make sure you keep on top of the captains and let them know they can call you at any your if they need a mate. I landed more than a few good jobs by answering my phone at 4 am and hussling down to the dock when someone's mate no showed after a night of drinking. Keep a log book of all your hours, sea conditions, etc.

Listen more than you talk, be prompt everyday, work hard. Realize that it is a job, and not just going fishing. These people pay good money and take vacation for you to show them a good time. Always be positive and helpful, no matter how shitty your day is.

Bring a banana, PB&J and pink lemonade for lunch.
Invest in a nice pair of Murrells Inlet Tennis Shoes or McClellanvile Hi-tops

Learn to tie a bowtie with one hand and you are set for life.

And learn a shitload of cool lingo to use on the radio. You have to sound like your a CIA operative calling in an air strike on a terrorist compound when discussing your days activities.

Also, pickup a terrible nicotine habit if you haven't already.

And go ahead and buy nothing but quick dry shirts with giant fluorescent fish pictures on the back of them from here on out. Only wear one to work each day. Walking around a restaurant covered in fish guts and blood earns you dock cred with all the tourist.

This and go ahead and get your "6 pack" license if you can, it won't hurt.

I work at the biggest marina in Charleston so I couldn't be In a better place. There's just not too many sports fishers here right now and the ones that are have mates. I talk daily with 3 or 4 of the captains but it seems they are set for now on a mate position, but they all have my number. I may go talk to talk to some guys over a Ripley light marina across the river, they have much more fishing boats over there.

spend $30 bucks on some business cards with your name and cell #- stating that you want to work and can be called on short notice- the need will arise- be prepared

you can also hand the cards out to fresh ass and tell them you can PERFORM on short notice also- just be sure and your hands dont smell like MULLET

Word of mouth is your best bet along with pounding the docks. Have your mate buddies talk you up and get you on some ride along for no charge to the boat. Also have them suggest you fill in for them if they can't make it. Its a tight circle. The boss mans boat is in Mexico but I will check with him. Ultimatley though, the decision is up to his Captain. The boat is basically run as a business and he's the boss.Other marine repair and maintenance is always a plus too.

Move to the Outer Banks. Lots of charter boats up there fishing year round. Not a whole lot of charter boats around Charleston. If you can land a mate job up there you can make pretty decent $$. In prime time they are fishing 7 days a week@ $200-300 day cash is pretty good. Captains do pretty good too. Going rate is around 1k a foot on boat. Most of those boats are 60 footers. 65foot boat=65k a year for captain. I have my own boat and love to fish just as much as anyone, but 7 days a week14-16 hours a day gets old. Good luck
