    State gives OK for possum drop celebration in NC



    ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- A state agency has given the organizer of the annual Possum Drop in the North Carolina mountains permission to lower a live possum in a clear box as part of his New Year's Eve celebrations.

    The Wildlife Resources Commission says Clay Logan can capture a live possum for the Possum Drop at his Brasstown store. Logan plans to gently lower in animal in the box at the stroke of midnight to ring in the new year. He started his tradition two decades ago.

    The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have been fighting Logan. Last year, a judge refused to let the state issue a permit, and Logan dropped a box covered with pictures of possums, refusing to say what was inside.

    PETA says it will fight the permit.

    Fear and hate are two entirely different critters, but I reckon it doesnt make as good of a story.
