GRAND BAYOU, LA —
A massive sinkhole in Louisiana “burped” last week, swallowing up trees and water and it’s all caught on video.
The sinkhole first was discovered in Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou in June 2012.
The monitoring and alert status has been heightened to Code 3, meaning the seismic activity has elevated to a point similar to what has been seen in past monitoring prior to a sloughing on the shore or movement beneath the sinkhole. (source)
The area of the latest burp, when air and gas from deep in the sinkhole bubbles up, is believed to be measure at 50’ x 25’.

The sinkhole, which state officials have determined was caused by the collapse of an underground salt dome, has been steadily widening for over a year, but the dramatic video shot by the OEP shows the sinkhole swallowing up trees and land in a furious 30 seconds of swirling water. The sinkhole was caused by a company named Texas Brine’s drilling into a massive salt dome, for which the state is currently suing the company.
Residents have been evacuated near the sinkhole and the most affected residents began receiving weekly checks from Texas Brine in the amount of $875 per week.
