    Default Trumpets

What is a good trumpet to start out on? I have always been intrigued by these calls. I would like a local custom made trumpet if I can find one.

There were some good looking reassonably priced ones at Mr. Cox's table at SEWE last weekend. I didn't try any since I was sick though.

Wished I could have made it out. Work had me tied down for the weekend.

Billy Buice has inventory. Call and see what he has on hand. I will put his trumpets up against anyone else out there.

Thanks! I was hoping you would chime in. I have seen some of the calls of his that you have picked up.

Aside from the wonderful craftsmanship that comes from over 40 years of building Trumpets, Billy has a real sense of materials and uses wood that he hand selects - musical instrument grade wood for tone that won't change over time. I own some of his calls that are over 25 years old and still have great sound quality.

The real plus to Billy's calls is that the mouthpieces are interchangeable. Simply insert a different diameter mouthpiece and the call sounds like a different bird.

Everyone plays a trumpet differently. I primarily use the #3 or #4 MP..one thing for certain about a trumpet, you must put in your "due diligence" and practice to become proficient. Once you are past the initial learning curve, a trumpet will become an integral part of your calling arsenal. I have called in and killed many "hard turkeys" that have been called to and hunted by others..

A Trumpet sounds vastly different in the woods than it does in a room or your vehicle. Trumpet calls sound like a turkey. Billy's calls start at $175 and are worth every cent.

Start with a Osage Orange call or perhaps an Ironwood- or go with Billy's recommendation on what he has on hand.. There may be a Koa call or two available soon- I took Billy a board I selected in Kona in December that he said was outstanding. They should be ready in March..

Koa is a wonderful wood from the tonal standpoint too.

Good luck. PM me if you need more info or want to hear me play one over the phone.

    Best regards,

When's the next opportunity to show up? March 15th ??

If you can end up sounding like Leroy on a Buice, you will kill a pile. That thing is pure turkey sexy talk.
I'm going to heaven for the weather and hell for the company.
